Odd jobs

I've always been fascinated by how the thousands if not millions of jobs, nomatter how niche and how bizarre, always seem to get filled. Take the job of the high rise window washer for example. How the hell does someone fall into that profession? It's not like you were exposed to it through the media, like some folks get exposed to law, medicine, crime investigation and other professions through popular prime time TV shows. I seriously doubt a personality test or reading "What Color is my Parachute" pointed the person to the wonderful profession of skyscraper cleaning. I can't imagine they saw a job posting on Craig's List. I just don't get it. Are they former stunt doubles too old to land decent gigs in Hollywood anymore? Are they ex mountain climbers that couldn't hack it on the motivational speaking tour? I know. Maybe they're blind and just don't realize that they're standing precariously 65 stories above the ground.

But that's just one example. How about the people who prepare and shoot fast food for commercials? You are aware that the burger you're eating doesn't even come close to looking like a distant cousin to the one portrayed on TV? Anyway, where do these people come from? I don't recall it being mentioned in second grade during the "what do you want to be when you grow up" discussion.

Let's see... Other bizarre fields... People who paint the yellow lines in the middle of the road. People who drive those obnoxious beeping cars to transport the elderly in the airports. People who drive those machines that smoothen the ice in ice rinks. Full time taste testers. Alligator wrestlers. Manikan designers. And the list goes on and on and on...
